Celebrating 50 Years

Avemco Insurance Company is proud to be celebrating 50 years of serving the general aviation community. We attribute this longevity to our smart approach to doing business and – more importantly – the loyalty of our customers.

From our humble beginnings to industry-leading safety initiatives, we've been fortunate to share our success with so many policyholders. And our commitment to smart business decisions and caring customer service remains as strong as ever.

Company Milestones

  • 1960 – Aviation Employees Insurance Company founded in Bethesda, MD by a small group of aviation-oriented businessmen.
  • 1961 – First aircraft policy was written.
  • 1963 – Name change to Avemco Insurance Company.
  • 1977 – Rated A+ (Excellent) by A.M. Best*. (Avemco® has been rated A+ every year since 1977.)
  • 1982 – Moved operations to a new facility at Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick, MD.
  • 1983 – Avemco Corporation listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
  • 1997 – Acquired by HCC Insurance Holdings, Inc. a leading international specialty insurance group.

Recent Accomplishments

  • Became a charter sponsor of the Airmanship Education Research Initiative (AERI), designed to identify root causes of accidents and develop programs to help prevent them.
  • Became Sponsor of the WINGS lapel pin award given at completion of each phase of the FAASTeam WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program.
  • Became sponsor and advisory board member of Build A Plane along with facilitating the donation of many aircraft hulls to the nonprofit that brings real airplanes to schools.
  • Support loss prevention efforts through seminars, articles and multiple program and event sponsorships.
  • Created the Avemco Safety Rewards Program designed to reduce the frequency and severity of general aviation accidents by rewarding customers who seek ongoing training with incentives.
  • Partnered with King Schools to develop the Practical Risk Management course series using Avemco claims data to create fact based training scenarios.
  • Acquired a Flight Simulator to enhance Avemco underwriters' loss prevention expertise.

The Next 50 Years
The next 50 years will in many ways mirror the past 50. We'll continue to be innovative in our business model, proactive towards pilot safety, and committed to fundamentals with integrity. Because whatever the future holds, smart business decisions and caring customer service will never go out of date.
